Dark Fiber IRU

Dark fiber refers to strands of optical fiber within a cable where the fiber is provided ‘unlit’ and ready for a customer to utilize for their own network services.  An IRU is an Indefeasible Right of Use Agreement that allows for the customer to pre-pay a long-term capital lease (typically having a 20-year term) for individual strands of fiber optic glass within Outside Plant (OSP) cables.  PBI charges customers for the pre-paid (one-time, upfront) IRU plus monthly Operations and Maintenance (O&M) services based on the length of the fiber route.  This is in addition to monthly Colocation (Colo) and power usage within the ILA huts.
